A parent’s worst nightmare is hearing your baby cry and not being able to help. There are times when your baby might cry for no reason — it could be as simple as gas, or it could be something more serious. If you have a newborn, their cries can indicate that they are in pain or need something like a diaper change. In general, crying is the way that babies communicate when they’re hungry, tired, uncomfortable, or need something from you.

At first glance, this may seem stressful and make you wonder what on earth you did wrong to result in this adorable little creature crying so much! Rather than thinking of crying as a negative thing, try to see it as an opportunity to get to know them better. Here are 5 ways that will help your baby stop crying.

Change the diaper

Diaper rash, while sometimes mistaken for a sign of infection, is actually a rash caused by a lack of moisture or regular changing. This usually happens on the baby’s bottom, but it can happen anywhere on a baby’s skin that is covered by a diaper for an extended period of time.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and this is the best solution if your baby is inconsolable and you are at a loss as to what might be the cause. It will also help to avoid infection and irritation.

When your baby is crying, check their diaper first. If it’s wet or dirty, change it. If your baby is wearing cloth diapers, change them as often as you would disposables because they don’t hold as much moisture. It’s also important to make sure that you’re using the right size diapers.

An ill-fitting diaper can make your baby uncomfortable and lead to excessive crying. If your baby has a clean diaper but is still crying, try changing the type of diaper. There may be something wrong with the type of diaper you’re using.

Hold your baby

Studies have shown that child-parent contact has positive physiological effects on the child. It helps lower the child’s stress levels, which in turn, helps your baby fall asleep faster.

The parent’s touch also has psychological and emotional benefits, offering reassurance and strengthening the parent-child relationship. If your baby is fussy and inconsolable, sometimes all they need is a little extra TLC. Holding your baby skin-to-skin is a great way to calm them down and help them fall asleep.

You can also try swaddling your baby. Swaddling is a technique that involves wrapping your baby in a light blanket so that their arms are held close to their bodies. It’s common for newborns and infants to be overstimulated and fussy, making it difficult for them to calm down.

Swaddling your baby can help them relax and fall back asleep. There are many ways to swaddle a baby. The back-to-basics technique is the most common and easiest to learn. Find a lightweight blanket that’s large enough to wrap your baby in. Make sure it’s not too heavy or your baby could overheat.

Rock or sway your baby

Rock or sway your baby in your arms while making sure they are close to your heart. This will help them relax and stop crying. Swaying or rocking your baby may help them fall asleep, particularly if they are overtired or hungry. If you are breastfeeding, rocking or swaying your baby while nursing may help with latching on.

If your baby is in their crib, try gently rocking their crib back and forth. If your baby is in your arms, use a rocking chair if you have one. If you are sitting on a couch, you can push your knees up slightly to mimic a rocking motion. Some babies respond best to being rocked very slowly. Others will prefer a more rapid motion in your arms.

Lay down with your baby

If your baby is fussy and you’re not sure why, try putting them down in a safe place such as their crib or a bed, or even on a couch near you. Your baby may be overtired and just want a break from the day.

If your baby is too young to be put in their crib, you can try laying them down next to you on a couch or a bed. Make sure that they are safe and not in danger of falling off.

If you are breastfeeding, try laying down with your baby near you. This can be a great way to get some rest while breastfeeding at the same time. If you have a swaddle-friendly baby, you can lay down with your baby swaddled beside you on the couch or bed.

Try a different position or hold

If you are holding your baby and they are crying inconsolably, try switching to a different position. You can try cradling your baby under their legs or switching to sitting while holding them upright. If you are using a baby carrier while holding your baby, try switching to a different position.

You can try holding them cradled under their legs or upright against your chest. If you are laying or sitting with your baby, try changing positions. You can try laying on your side with your baby beside you or sitting upright with your baby on your lap.

Hopefully, you now have an idea of what to do with your baby when they start crying. Remember, these methods may not work for all situations, and you may have to try more than one thing to get your baby to stop crying.

Remember, babies cry for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes, there’s nothing you can do about it. At other times, you may have been doing something wrong and be able to correct the issue. If your baby is crying and you’re not sure why, try one of these techniques. It may just be the thing they need to calm down.
